The University of Ioannina (www.uoi.gr/en) was founded in 1964 in Ioannina, Epirus, in the Northwestern part of Greece. Today the University has 23 departments with over 500 faculty members, 30,000 undergraduate students and more than 3,000 graduate students (MSc and PhD).
The University of Ioannina has established a quality management system that is in conformance with the International Management System Standard ISO 9001:2000, as well as the Greek Management Efficiency Standard, with a scope of “Project Management of Research and Development of Technological and Other Related Programs and Activities”.
The project’s technical work is undertaken by the Department of Fine Arts and Art Sciences, the only department of the School of Fine Arts at the University of Ioannina, which has been active since the academic year 2000–2001. Its mission is to cultivate and promote the Fine Arts and related research both theoretically and practically. The department offers students a comprehensive education in artistic practice, encouraging critical dialogue between Art, Art History, and Art Theory. It aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary for their professional development as artists, historians, or theorists. Through specialized undergraduate and postgraduate programs, the department provides expertise in areas such as Painting, Sculpture (including Printmaking), analog and digital Photography, Computer Animation, Video, and Multimedia. In addition, it actively contributes to aesthetic education and enriches the cultural life of the local community.
In collaboration with the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications of the University of Ioannina, the project integrates technological innovation with artistic and theoretical research. This department provides robust undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in Computer Science and Telecommunications. It emphasizes interdisciplinary research and the application of cutting-edge technologies in various domains, including Human-Computer Interaction, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, and Digital Media.
Central to the Department’s innovation ecosystem is the Human-Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCILab). The HCILab addresses teaching and research needs in the areas of human-computer interaction at all academic levels. It supports scientific research and organizes national and local conferences, symposia, seminars, and lectures. HCILab also houses the XRCENTER, an interdisciplinary research and outreach center. XRCENTER focuses on public engagement with emerging technologies through interactive courses, data visualization, seminars, and the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage. It brings together expertise from Biomedical Technology, Medical Informatics, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Medicine, Psychology, and Education. With over 25 faculty members and a dedicated team, XRCENTER plays a pivotal role in both the scientific and cultural development of the region.
This synergy among departments fosters an interdisciplinary and collaborative environment for innovative projects that span art, technology, and cultural engagement.

The Department intends to contribute to general aesthetic education and the local cultural life. The Department of Fine Arts and Art Sciences provides excellent learning opportunities through specialized undergraduate programs and offers expertise in Fine Arts, History and Theory of Art, Painting, and Sculpture including Printmaking, analog and digital Photography, Computer Animation, Video, and Multimedia. The courses offered aim to stimulate artists to acquire theoretical background and to stimulate art historians and theorists to gain a deep understanding of past and present artistic practice. The Department offers postgraduate courses and awards degrees up to a doctoral level.
The Department of Fine Arts and Art Sciences fills a gap in Art Education in Greece, a country rich in cultural heritage and a challenging field in contemporary art. The aim of the University of Ioannina Research Committee is the management of funds, which come from any source and are intended to cover expenses of any kind, essential for the needs of research, educational, training and developmental projects as well as for the needs of continuous training projects. These funds can also cover expenses of projects that provide scientific and technological services, the elaboration of special studies, the implementation of tests, measurements, laboratory exams and analyses, consultations, as well as other related services or activities that contribute to the connection between education and research with the industry. These services and activities are implemented or provided by the scientific personnel of the University of Ioannina, in close collaboration with other specialists or external scientific personnel.
Furthermore, the aforementioned Quality Management System is compliant with the requirements of the Greek Management Efficiency Standard, in the scope of “Project Management of Research and Development of Technological and Other Related Programs and Activities”.
